In the Spring, as soon as you can see some new growth at the bottom of your rose bush, go ahead and cut them down to form a mound. The red arrow in this photo shows new growth (green stem and new buds).

In the Summer, after the roses have bloomed, you will notice some areas with no growth. Cut off the dead limbs and shape your rose bush.
